Anyone buy yarn online? If so, where? I'm feeling the need to browse and don't want to leave my house...

Here's a few I like to browse:

Knitpicks.com

I am not a yarn person (yet), but I buy a lot of silk scarf blanks and other things at dharmatrading.com. I love them. They have a huge variety of yarns, but they aren't colored. However, you can dye animal protein yarns (including silk) with KoolAid, which I've started doing with silk. If you like KoolAidy colors and cheap, nontoxic dye, it's pretty cool.

We bought a lot of dye from them at one point when we were doing a big project, but it's been so many years that I don't even remember what we were dyeing, LOL! I'd forgotten all about them, so thank you!!

I also just found these people in Dayton and I love love love them. (These people -- heh, it's one woman.) http://fiberworksdayton.wordpress.com/ They don't seem to have a website to sell stuff, but I bet you could email or call and work something out. They have an amazing amount of stuff, beautifully colored. I bought 18 kinds of roving and didn't come near running out of options, and roving is not that commonplace, at least in knitting stores. Arlene is super friendly and helpful, and if I lived there, I'd go all the time.

LOL, I'm going to be in Dayton in a few weeks, and was trying to decide if I wanted to visit that yarn store. I wasn't sure, since their website isn't that descriptive, but your recommendation sold me. :)

Depends on how much you want to spend. Yarn.com can have some great bargains and a huge selection. Knitpicks is okay, but working with their Felici, I keep feeling as if it's going to have no elasticity in my socks (not that I'm going to be wearing my self-striping Fourth Doctor socks to the office on a regular basis.

I shop the The Loopy Ewe, but I've also been shopping the dyers themselves. The Verdant Gryphon only has purples up at the moment, but they're just restarting after the two halves of The Sanguine Gryphon splitting. Their Eidos yarn is very yummy, though. There's Indigodragonfly, which has a decidedly fannish, silly bent with names such as "The Earth Is Doomed. (Giles)", "Only, The Exact Phrase I Used Was, “Don’t.” (Inara)", and "Bright Lights, Big City, Busy Highway, Slow Unicorn." Plus, they custom dye any of their standard colors, so if you want, say, three skeins of Self Elmolation for a project, you can pick your base and order them dyed up.

My current favorite yarn shopping, though, happens on Ravelry, seeing what people have in their stashes for sale or trade. You can spend hours browsing that.

I bought a pound of nepalese sari yarn as a fiftieth birthday present for someone for a really good price here (http://www.zanzibartrading.com/RecycledSilkYarn.htm)

I know it's a little extravagant, but it's a project I support, and the yarn is insanely beautiful.

Jimmy Beans Wool (http://www.jimmybeanswool.com/) is my favorite. They have a wide selection and the fastest shipping I've ever seen. They're my go-to place for Lorna's Laces and they have a "colorway of the month" program that's kind of addictive, as well as good sales.

Angelika's Yarn Store (http://www.yarn-store.com/) doesn't have the prettiest Web site, but she also has a good selection of Lorna's Laces as well as several other brands. Also great customer service.

I bought some discontinued yarn at Paradise Fibers (http://www.paradisefibers.net/) last year and was impressed with their Web site and their helpfulness.

Flying Fingers (http://www.flyingfingers.com/) is another store that could stand to update their Web site, but they have a great selection of upscale yarns -- I especially like them for Colinette -- and they have nice big pictures of each yarn so you get a good idea of the colors. They ship quickly and sometimes put friendly little notes in the package.

Knitpicks is fun to browse, and I love their print catalog. But they must ship via land tortoise; everything I've ever ordered from them has taken weeks to arrive. And I've found the quality of their yarns to be iffy. They have a great book sale twice a year, though, so it's worth watching for that.

Have fun!

I'm a huge fan of purlsoho.com (www.purlsoho.com) and their blog the purlbee. If you want to drool, but not be able to afford anything, there's String (www.string.com) which is really high end stuff.

I also have shopped from Knitpicks and Royal Yarns (www.royalyarns.com). I got the 22 skeins for the dress I'm working on from Royal because they'll special order for you if you need a lot of the same dye lot. It took a little more time, but they were fabulous.

If money is an issue, Herrschner's has been around forever and they carry yarn you would find at local craft stores, Red Heart, Caron etc. They have colors online that the stores don't carry and you can get as much as you want.

They will ship test swatches as well.

I can't believe no one has recommended http://littleknits.com/ yet. I totally trawl this site year round looking for amazing - ah-mazing - full bag deals of some fairly nice yarns.

I haven't bought yarn online, but my friend Debbie (from my yarn group) wanted me to pass along this company.
