Eek!

So, if you were microwaving a jar of peanut butter (that had been refrigerated and was all hard) for 16 seconds to soften it up enough to spread, and you failed to notice a tiny bit of foil on the lip of the jar, and at around 14 seconds the microwave did one of those arcing things to the foil, would you assume the microwave was probably still okay despite the incident?

It still turns on. There was a tiny burned spot on the lip of the pb jar, but no burn marks of any kind on the inside of the microwave.

Yep, it's ok. Speaking as one who has done her share of microwave murder :)

Whew! Thanks. I don't like the thought of lightning storms inside my microwave, so I try to be careful.

If you took the PB out right away, the microwave should be fine.

But now your PB might taste like butt. All of it. I hope it doesn't, though.

Nope, the pb tastes fine! The inside of the microwave smelled kind of funky until it aired out, though. Like ozone mixed with burning. :-P

Oh, good! I'm glad your pb tastes fine!

But yeah, about your microwave? Take half a lemon, squeeze it into a bowl of water, then put the lemon and the bowl of water in the microwave and zap it for ... one minute? Natural way to clean your microwave!

I would assume it was still okay. I once accidentally put a plate with gold accents in the microwave and, woo, there were sparks, but the microwave suffered no long term effects and lasted us several more years (before we gave it away).

It's funny because I've been thinking when this microwave dies (which I don't think it will any time soon) that maybe we wouldn't get another one. But now that there was a possibility I might have killed it, I was all freaked out! LOL.

I agree with everyone, it takes more than a little spark to kill a microwave (and I've killed dozens.) It's more like if you put a bowl with tin foil over it for 2 minutes that you can really blow it up.

:D

Whew! I was worried. It'd be one thing if it esploded for no known reason, but to think that I might have killed it...

Well, technically speaking, not so much murder as manslaugter. Or microslaugter I guess. It's not like you set out to kill it or anything.

Sounds like you are all set on the microwave-reassurance front!

So. You refrigerate your peanut butter?

It's the natural kind of pb, so when you first get it, it's separated into more solid pb and a layer of oil. You stir the heck out of it to mix it up, then keep it in the fridge so it stays mixed instead of separating again and again. The mixing is a pain in the ass, LOL!

Hee! I have had that kind in the past, and I agree, it always feels like stirring a pot of setting cement to get the thing to blend up again.

I was worried that you were putting Skippy in the refrigerator. But I should have known it was the natural pb! :D

Also, we were driving around near your area today (I think -- it was by mistake because we veered off course) and we would have buzzed your place had it not been for the fact that I couldn't remember the exact directions.

Keeping it upside down in the fridge keeps it mixed, too. And the fridge helps keep it from going rancid, as it might at room temp.

Wow, that's helpful information about keeping the jar upside down. :)

Thanks...

You're very welcome! I was thrilled to find my pb upside down one day after a friend was over. Stealth upsidedowning of peanut butter by loved ones is such a lovely gift. :)

You might now have a "hot spot" in your microwave. Hopefully not, but I know that sometimes happens after microwaving a bit of metal.

I've used it a few times and it's been okay so far. *Crosses fingers*

You'd know if your magnatron was on the fritz (hee - very descriptive) because of the sparking staticky sounds when it was turned on, even for only a couple of seconds. Definitely the blue screen of death in microwave lingo.

So, if you're hearing only nice, normal, m-wave sounds, then you should be okay.

Mind you, I can't imagine NOT having a microwave. I made most of tonight's dinner in it (and avoided frying on top of the stove).

Hardware-hyped hugs,
H.

Eek! That sounds scary. So far it's been okay, I've used it to boil water and pop microwave popcorn. :-)
