I'd hazard to guess you've seen the ads for the NEW one (he admits he took human growth steroids so he could buff up for it). And it looked like Julie Benz was in the preview I saw.
There is an original Rambo, yes. And this ain't even close.
Yes, this. The name "Rambo" did not appear in the title of the first movie, First Blood, but in the title of the second, Rambo: First Blood, Part II. My dad loves these flicks.
I have a very high Rocky tolerance -- especially the first movie and the last, which returned to the original formula; I love the "simple good man toughing it out" and "an honest loss can be a triumph" scenarios -- but I can't hack R and NC-17 violence, so Rambo is beyond my ken.
I read the original Rambo on a plane, having bought it last-minute in an airport bookshop when it had just come out. It was about a Vietnam vet, i had to own it! :)
And it was actually very cool. Heh. Much cooler than the movie. Why Sly felt like he had to make *another* one of these is beyond me. Blah.
I assumed that they were re-releasing the original movie for some reason, like maybe it was the anniversary of when it first came out or something. There's been nothing about the ads I've seen that led me to believe it was a newly-made film. Sheesh.
Ah ha ha. If you've seen the original, you'd know, because it was totally different. Plus, Sly looked more like a young guy just out of 'Nam and less like some sort of G.I. Joe action doll. *shudder*
*Book Spoiler!!*
In the book, John Rambo dies. I actually like that ending better.
I liked the book because we have Rambo-the-vet who's fresh out of the war, coming home to see his friend who, he finds out, is dead. This is hard on him, and then he's harassed by the local cops and suddenly he just...flips. Crazy-insane Vietnam *war* vet? One of my bulletproof kinks. So the book rocked 'cause i got to read about Rambo goin' all ninja on the cops and stuff.
The movie was...eh. Okay, but not as good. Any sequels i totally ignored.
I don't mind war movies if they're not too...i dunno. I can watch, say, Saving Private Ryan. It's angsty and sad but has a good, solid bit of hope in the end.
I *cannot* watch something like Schindler's List. It just fucking hurts too much. Those poor people...
I've never seen any of the Rambo movies -- pretty much all I know is that Sylvester Stallone is in them, and they have something to do with war and possibly helicopters. But apparently, this is a new movie.
Oh, too bad! I actually really like the first Rocky film -- it's kind of devastating and simple, and I love that he loses but he's still the hero. But later ones were just whack-a-doodle, so. Yis.
I hope you are feeling okay! I saw that you had finally gotten hit with the family plague. I really hope it goes away quickly and leaves you free to sleep and write and do whatever without feeling exhausted and icky. *hugs*

Yep. The Rambo and Rocky franchises follow the same template, imo, in that there was a good (or decent, in the case of "First Blood") film that was outside the Hollywood norm and surprising to people... and that were then followed by increasingly ludicrous blockbuster sequels that completely missed the appeal of the small, first film.
And yes, the marketing for the new Rambo movie is about the worst I've ever seen — in their attempts not to show Stallone onscreen (in order to hide how much he's aged), they're confusing everyone. Everyone thinks it's a rerelease, and I imagine it's going to tank at the B.O.
Brand new movie. Youngest brother saw it over the weekend and pronounced it 'the coolest and bloodiest movies he's ever seen'. Plus Julie Benz is in it.
As the many people before have stated - new movie :) And I went and saw it this weekend... mostly because I have a weakness for action movies - the kind that almost never get made anymore, and I did like the first movie of the franchise. And of course, my brother wanted to go.
I have to say, that for what it was - a big budget action movie - it was quite good. Predictable, yes. Great action, yes. Although, I did have to turn away a few times because the action was explicit and bloody and much more graphic than I could just sit and watch, but it does make a good point about Burma (which is where it's set). Sly stated in interviews, he wanted the action to show the absolute brutality of the genocide and civil war that's been raging there for the better part of a century, and I think he succeeded. Quite frankly, a lot of the violence horrified me for the very fact that I could believe that this was happening right now in Burma. *shrugs* I enjoyed it, but you have to like action and for this movie, you have to be prepared for the completely unsettling portrayal of genocide and the cruelty of violence.
