Answer quickly!

I ordered a video game for my niece for Christmas. It is now the Amazon Gold Box deal (for an hour) and $17 cheaper. I could order the current less expensive version and return the more expensive one when it arrived, couldn't I? Should I bother? I'll have to pay to return the more expensive one, plus I'll have to actually go to the post office etc to do it. It might be too much trouble. But... $17.

ETA - I decided to order the cheaper version and return the more expensive one. Thanks!

$17! Definitely do the buy/return.

Yeah, I went for it. If it had been $5 or less, I wouldn't have bothered, but it's enough that it's worth it, I think. A pain in the neck! But worth it.

Did you buy the earlier one from Amazon, too? If so, you could call Amazon and see if they'd just refund the difference to you. It is technically their policy not to do this, but if you strike the right tone and get a helpful CS rep, you may succeed. I know someone who managed it last week.

I ordered the super discount deal one.

I did buy the earlier one from Amazon, too, and this was really good advice! I did call, because it would make so much more sense for them to just refund the difference instead of having to mail me a second one etc, but the cs rep I talked with said no, she can't do that, the only way to do it is to send back the first one when it arrives. So that's what I'm going to do, I guess. *Sigh* It's really a pain in the arse but I suppose it's worth it considering it's $17 and not, like, $4.

When I'm faced with this, I always ask myelf how much my time is worth per hour and divide it out. Sound like $17 is enough to bother for a video game. :)

Yeah, I decided $17 was enough to bother. :-)

Contact them and ask for the refund automatically, Amazon is pretty nice about such things.

I did and they said no. Apparently, they discontinued their post-purchase price guarantee in Sept, but there was little announcement about it and lots of people are mad, LOL. Anyway, I ordered the special-price one and I'm going to return the original when it arrives. If it was a few dollars I wouldn't bother, but $17 is more than a few!

Well that's lame, obviously that's the way to go, silly Amazon!

It is, it's totally lame. Why spend all the extra money shipping (I got free shipping, so I'm not paying for it) the second package to me, so I can send the first one back and get a refund, when instead they could just credit me the difference? But apparently that's what they want to do. *Shrugs*

I've had a $10 rule for a long time. If the difference is less than $10, it usually isn't worth the time and effort. If it is over $10, than unless it is a total pain in the behind, I usually go for it.

That sounds like a good rule! I wouldn't have bothered for a few dollars, but $17!

Can you cancel the expensive one? If it's from Amazon, they let you do that if it's not already in the pipeline.

ETA Sorry; didn't see up thread :-)

Thanks, Jane! The more expensive one is in a package with some other things, plus I think it's in Illinois now, LOL, after starting in Nevada. So it was too late to cancel it, although I certainly would have if I could! Hopefully Amazon won't be difficult about letting me return the first one. If it ever arrives, ha ha.
