So apparently I need to watch 24: Redemption, because Robert Carlyle is in it.
Is Redemption, like, a whole season's worth of shows? Or is a mini-series kind of thing?
I've never seen ANY of the 24 seasons before this. Is there anything I really need to know? Is there a fairly short synopsis of what's happened on the show previously somewhere?

Each season is it's own complete arc and while the themes and surviving characters evolve, they're separate stories -- like watching the Bond movies.
24 does have a distinctive flow and story telling style, so I'd recommend Netflixing the first season - the show is pure adrenaline and you'll want to mainline the season. Every episode is a cliffhanger leading into the next.
Nice part is that the actor you're interested in will be new to the mix, so there isn't any character history that you'll be missing. :-)
