Do we know if the Firefly characters (not just the crew of Serenity, but the whole 'verse) celebrate Christmas or some other winter holiday? I know they seem to celebrate birthdays...

Pretty sure it never got mentioned. Book and the other Shepherds might but I imagine the difficulty of keeping track of one date on planets with different length years...

Yes, good point! :-) And the winter solstice isn't particularly meaningful if you are on one planet with winter one day and a different one where it's summer three days later...

I'd imagine the Alliance has a single standard calendar; individual planets may have their own, too, but it'd seem important to be able to do business using readily agreed upon dates.

That's probably true, too. It's very complicated!

There is Unification day, which might suggest an Alliance standard calender.

To be stereotypical (and totally me): the guy who delivered the coffin wore a yarmulke, so it's safe to say Jewish holidays are observed.

Oh yes, thank you. :-)

I was thinking about that, as well, with the commentary going on in my head. That really makes me want to know how the rabbinate would negotiate sunrise/sundown in space...

It boggles the mind, but they could establish an artificial sunrise/sunset on the ships themselves. For holidays, they'd either have to adapt holidays specifically to new planetary systems or somehow have an adaptable perpetual calendar so they'd know what's going on when on Earth.

Makes you wonder how the Jews in Dune (second trilogy) kept their faith as well.
