I just finished the first season of HBO's Rome and I really enjoyed it; the second season is coming via Netflix any day now.
Did you see Latter Days (a movie about a gay Mormon, very cute with a happy ending)? I think you might like it. In a similar vein, Saved! (about a group of high school seniors at a very small town, very Christan high school) is unbelievably funny, and also has a sweet ending.
Death at a Funeral (http://www.deathatafuneral-themovie.com/) for a bit of English comedy complete with sibling rivalry over writerly reputations and eulogy-giving, blackmail, accidental ingestion of illicit hallucinogens, and quite a bit of naked Alan Tudyk. Wonderful ensemble cast and humor of questionable taste...considering the setting. If you can find this one playing somewhere near you, I definitely recommend it.
"Italian for beginners": An awesome Danish romantic comedy/drama with a low key, engaging cast and a story line that is both charming and interesting.
TV show....Hornblower? ( Actually, I think it's released as Horatio Hornblower in the US). Swashbuckling! Naval Engagements! Ioan Gruffudd having an excellent English accent! One scene of random male nudity! Implied sodomy!
Movie: Have you seen "The Departed"? It was definitely my fave movie of last year. I really liked "Hot Fuzz"--pretty hilarious, although "Sean of the Dead", which is with the same guys, is a bit funnier, IMHO.
TV Show: Have you seen "Deadwood"? Probably in like top 5 fave shows of all time. Swearingen is one of the most amazing characters I've seen come to life. There is a lot of swearing, though. I second the Rome recommendation of "Rome", which is fantastic. "Battlestar Gallactica" is amazing, but you really would have a lot of catching up to do (if you decide to see this one, definitely start with the mini series before going into Season One.
Movie- I'm going with an oldie, but IMO, a goodie-"much ado about nothing" with Kenneth and Emma. Those two are amazing. I actually watched Henry V for them, which it was totally worth, btw.
TV Show- Supernatural. Seriously, it's not high drama or anything, but it's a damned good show and you should give it a chance. I think it might remind you of the good parts of the Whedonverse plus an unbelievably good soundtrack AND '67 Chevy Impala. Perfection.
Film: "Grandma's Boy" - Most certainly. Hilarious gamer/smoker movie that makes fun of a lot of stereotypes and has the characters from pretty much all the Happy Madison films.
TV: "Jekyll" - Awesome rendition/continuation of the Jekyll & Hyde story. Three thumbs up. It's now on BBC America, but you can also find it here: http://tv-links.co.uk
Movie: Disco Pigs, an Irish independent movie about an extremely (too?) close friendship that goes wrong when one of them falls for the other as teenagers.
TV show: Dead Like Me or At Home With the Braithwaites, if you have access to it. It's a British TV show about a family that wins the lottery.
Seconding the Jekyll as a TV show worth catching. (It's a mini-series, only six eps long but brilliant fun.)
Films, hmm. > Hot Fuzz (Black comedy that leaves you wanting to join the met.) > The Weeping Camel (Short, sweet tale of a rejected baby camel in the desert and how the tribe of herders respond.) > The Lives of Others (Brilliant, brilliant film about East/West Germany.) > Pan's Labyrinth (Dark, gothic Spanish fairytale, loved the ambiguous ending.) > Bedrooms & Hallways (Fun brit straight/gay/bi film about learning to keep an open mind.)
Movie: Picnic on Hanging Rock by Peter Weir (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073540/) for the strangest vintage schoolgirl school outing in history. It's old, but the weirdness keeps.
TV: Mmhh..., with so many nice things in the list... how about something short: The Lost Room, which is a mini-series (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0830361/) that certainly builds a mystery.
You should check out Summer Storm. I *just* (as in, two minutes ago) finished watching it, and my first thought was, "Hey, this was actually a pretty good gay film! I should recommend it to WG!" It seems that you watch enough gay cinema that you're the first one I think of when I see something good. :)
