The first couple of times John has sex with Rodney aren't even that good. Not that they're bad, exactly, it's just that they're still figuring each other out.

They get back from a mission where they'd accidentally walked in -- actually, it was more like walking by, what with the fact that none of the little hut-buildings had doors -- on a couple going at it hot and heavy, the woman on her back at the edge of the tall bed, the man standing between her widespread thighs and thrusting into her hard and fast. John and Rodney exchange one hot, slightly embarassed glance and keep walking, and John figures they have an unspoken agreement never to talk about it. But when they get back to Atlantis, Rodney walks John to his quarters and then comes inside, fumbles John up against the wall and kisses him, and... well, it would be rude to push him away, plus John has an erection that won't quit and getting off with someone sounds a hell of a lot better than doing it on his own. They're half undressed, fumbling with each other's slacks and underwear and fuck yes, Rodney's hand wraps around John's dick, and he almost comes right then. Then Rodney's hand tightens and John does come, sudden and unexpected, gasping. Rodney shoves him down onto the bed and rubs off against his hip, breath hot in John's ear. He moans when his dick throbs and dampens the bottom of John's t-shirt, but doesn't stop moving until it's done. Then he collapses on top of John, too heavy.

Five minutes later, Rodney gets up, looking pleased, and says, "We should do this again some time."

John thinks, Or maybe not, but, strangely, instead of saying that, he nods and goes into the bathroom to clean up.

By the time he comes out, Rodney's gone.

The second time is after Carson dies. There's too much hurt in Rodney's eyes for John to ignore, and knowing that there's something he can do to take it away, even briefly... He shows up at Rodney's quarters around midnight with a bottle of liquor he borrowed from Elizabeth -- it's still borrowing even though he didn't ask her, because he'll replace it when he can -- and they share a couple of drinks, then go to bed. He even lets Rodney fuck him, something he hasn't let anyone do for a long time, and it's okay. Not good, not bad. Rodney fucks him and comes and falls asleep almost immediately, and John gets dressed looking at him, watching his peacefully sleeping face as he's zipping up his slacks.

He doesn't leave a note, but Rodney smiles at him when they pass in the hallway the next day, both of them talking to the other people they're walking with, and John knows it was worth it.

The third time -- the time that's more an accident than anything else -- is different. It's early morning, and for some reason they're both up, and for some reason they take a walk way out on one of the piers, and they're sitting, looking out across the water. John turns his head and looks at Rodney, whose eyes are even more blue than the water, and then somehow they're kissing. There's no reason for it; it just happens. Rodney's mouth is a little bit salty, like he's been inhaling the sea air for too long, and John can't get enough of it. They kiss until they're both breathless, then pull back and look at each other. Rodney's grin is as wide as the one John can feel on his own face, and he stands up and tugs at John's hand.

They go back to John's quarters and proceed to have what is inarguably the best sex of John's life. After, he's tucked up against Rodney's back with an arm around his waist. He can feel the rumble as Rodney asks, "Is it just me, or was that really good?"

John grins. "Yeah," he says. "That was really good."

"I mean, even better than before," Rodney hastens to add. "Because that was good, too."

"This was better," John agrees, stroking his hand along Rodney's hip, feeling the hair prickle against his palm and fingers. "We should definitely do it again. Soon. And often."

"Definitely," Rodney says, and after that they're both quiet.
