(This icon is a joke. It was like 70 degrees here today.)

So, less than twelve hours after I registered for [livejournal.com profile] muskratjamboree, there's a post to the [livejournal.com profile] connexions yahoo group (the first official word since I think October) that the con is definitely happening.

Of course, the two cons are happening on the same weekend.

I could still easily, at this point, relinquish my spot at Muskrat Jamboree to someone on the waiting list and attend Connexions, but I'm thinking... not.

Muskrat Jamboree is insanely closer. I will not have to drive 7 hours in my ancient car or, alternatively, pay a hefty amount of cash to fly down.

Mr WG won't have to take vacation time for me to attend Muskrat Jamboree -- he can work from home on the Friday so that he can meet the boy at the bus stop, and otherwise I'll only be gone on the weekend. If I go to Connexions, he has to take three days off -- two to account for my travel and a third for Friday.

Muskrat Jamboree will be cheaper overall because of close proximity.

I won't be nearly as stressed about the travel if I don't have to drive to Connexions.

I'll get to meet new people (which is scary OMG eeeeeee, but in the long run a good thing for me.)

The bad things are missing Connexions, which I've really enjoyed when I attended, and not getting to see friends who might attend.

Urgh. Thoughts appreciated! Who on my flist thinks they'll be going to Connexions?

I was planning on going to Connexions (already had scheduled it as my "spring 2007 con" when I was thinking about it last year) but with the way it has been handled, not to mention the lack of change in hotel (I really, really don't like the bus station hotel), there's virtually little to no chance that I'll make the effort even though it's close enough that I could drive to it.

It was funny because I'd just commented to someone on the Connexions LJ asking if the con was happening or not -- and could we get official word from someone in the know -- about ten minutes before I got Martha's yahoo groups email.

I don't LOVE the bus station hotel, but I've not minded it for the most part. I am less impressed with the lack of communication and apparent lack of preparation, that's for sure.

I'm not going to Connexions this year. Even though it's sad because it was my first multi fandom slash con and I've been to the last 5? 6? I don't have much confidence considering the disorganization so far and the problems in years past that seem magnified already this year so I think I'm going to look at gonig to maybe the second Wincon as well as Vividcon (I'm going to keep trying until I actually make it!).

I'd say stick with the Muskrat Jamboree -- they at least seem on the ball organising on top of it being closer to you. If it becomes an annual thing, maybe I'll check it out next year.

I was talking to Mr WG about the dilemma over dinner and you were one of the people I figured probably wouldn't be going, along with [livejournal.com profile] byrne, mostly because of the distance and current last-minute issues. I mean, I guess it's not REALLY last minute, but it feels like it compared to previous years.

I'm not doing either of the cons (my best friend's wedding is that weekend), but I definitely think you're doing the right thing.

Thank you. *Hugs* I'm sorry I won't get to see you, but I'll think of you having fun at the wedding that weekend!

I'm going to MJ 2007 so... I think you should go there, too! *g*

LOL! I'm really leaning strongly toward MJ, in case that wasn't clear by my long list of reasons it would be the better choice for me. *Hugs* We will have much fun!!

It certainly sounds like MJ would be far more convenient for you, so I hope it ends up being the better choice people-wise. :)

I'm not going to Connexions this year, either. I'm finding I'm not in fandom enough for it and my favorite seminars are the ones that are about writing so I'm doing EPICon and seeing how that goes. Because of the distance and the number of friends-I-have-no-yet-met attending, I'm taking an insane amount of vacation time for that, too, and that makes other Cons pretty much impossible.

I may, however, be making a random trip to Boston with the family. I will keep you posted.

Ooh, please do keep me posted! :-)

EPICon sounds like a reasonable thing to try out, certainly! I hope you learn lots of cool things and have a great time. *Smooch*

Essene and I may go to part of Connexions. We couldn't have gone to muskrat; the 1st is Palm Sunday and I *have* to work. But connexions is close enough that we can go Friday and I can leave Saturday night.

I think it's great you are going to muskrat. I always love seeing you, but it should be great for you to meet knew folks. Thenk you can introduce us to great new people and writers after!

If I were close enough, I'd probably lean toward going to Connexions because I've certainly always had a wonderful time when I went. But the difference in distance is significant enough that muskrat seems like the way to go. I'll miss seeing you and [livejournal.com profile] essene, though! *Hugs*

i'm not going to either, but muskrat jamboree sounds like a much better bet. for one thing, it's here.

Yeah, the fact that it's so nearby is a major factor. *Hugs you*

I was actually surprised that Martha confirmed there was a con. I wasn't counting on it at all. MJ sounds like it will be a lot of fun and the proximity thing will be very cool for you. I'd consider joining you but the membership is closed.

...so I contemplate Connexions.

But I may just skip these and hit one of the science fiction conventions or go with my pal the game designer ([livejournal.com profile] media_junkie) to a gaming con at some point in the year.

I remember that game your pal the game designer made, the card game one we played when we were waiting for [livejournal.com profile] byrne at the airport. It was fun!

I was totally surprised that Connexions is happening. If word had come down sooner I might have very well made a different decision, but I think things do happen for a reason (sometimes, at least) and Muskrat will be good for me, I hope. *Hugs you* I'll obviously miss seeing you, though, if you end up going to Connexions. You were definitely one of the people I thought might go, what with it being not too unreasonably far away from you...

I'm ...proooobably going to Connexions, assuming it's really happening, as a) MJ is now closed, like JH said, and b) I'm desperately trying to get [livejournal.com profile] kimera to hit a con in the States that's not so far across the country for me that I can't be there. Connexions was going to be that back when it was more firmly claimed as happening, and I'm rather hoping it still can be. Though yes, I remain cynical based on experience.

From: [identity profile] wesleysgirl.livejournal.com
*Hugs you* I don't blame you on the cynical thing, that's for sure, but hopefully they'll get on the ball soon and that'll make things seem a little less iffy. I'll miss you. :-(

MJ's registration filled up in an insanely short amount of time, like, hours. I was shocked (and a little sad, since it means no space for people like you and JH to come!)

I'm going to Connexions if some of my friends here go, because it won't be any fun otherwise. But MJ sounds much better for you--when I read about it, I thought it sounded fun too! If they could open the membership back up I think they'd get a good number of takers.

Date: 2007-01-08 01:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wesleysgirl.livejournal.com
Yeah, I'm not sure why MJ was limited to 100 people -- I assume it's either because of the space they were able to get or because the people organizing it wanted to be cautious the first year (assuming there will be future years) and not get in over their heads, which I definitely respect, being a rather cautious sort myself. *Smoooch* I'll be sorry not to get to see you at Connexions, though.

I didn't realize it was MJ's first year--it sounds like it's got great potential!

And yes, no see eachother at Connexions. :( No see anyone, it sounds like, because everyone is so cautious now (not that I blame them).
