This isn't the first time this has happened, so I shouldn't be surprised, but I'm still stunned and horrified. Fic that I loved, that I re-read multiple times when I was feeling low and really needed it, has been removed from the web because of interpersonal problems between fandom people.

I know the fic belongs to the writer. I do.

But that doesn't make me feel any less horrible when I discover something that I love is gone and I can never get it back. That doesn't happen with published fic, after all. There might be limited editions, you might have to pay a lot of money for a battered copy, but you can almost always GET a copy.

When the fic gets taken down, it's gone forever.

I'm sure some people will roll their eyes reading this, thinking that I'm being overly dramatic, that it's "just" fic.

But those stories were more than that to me. I'm genuinely devastated.

Eta - Yes, it's my own fault for not saving them. That just makes it suck more.

I don't think you're being overly dramatic. In fact, I've been there myself a couple of times or more.

SOMEtimes you can find older fic with the Wayback Machine.

Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org/web/web.php)

It's worth a try, believe me. =>}

Good luck!

Dude, I totally agree with this - the only thing worse is when an entire archive goes 'poof!' :(

In hindsight I always think 'I should have saved it!', but it never occurs to me until it's too late. As I'm reading, it never occurs to me that the story might go away some day. I think it's like you said, we are used to the idea of published fic - always available in some way or another.

Poor baby. Tell me what you're missing, and I might be able to help you out from my 'library'. My HD is freaking loaded with some of everything.

Ah, my dear, we are all there with you. If we haven't be actually (as probably most of us have after a few years) we still get shakes and shivers at the thought. It's not melodramatic or overly dramatic -- it's how we feel.

Maybe contact the author and ask for a private copy, specifying that you'll not put it up anywhere? That's worked in the past, for me.

Oh, I hate it when that happens! It's the only thing that really makes me long for the good old days of usenet.

I did email the author but haven't heard back after her initial explanation that the entire site has been removed. I feel ill. I LOVED those stories.

**pouts** and here I was hoping to be Super-archiver, and save the day. Sorry, love. Hopefully someone else has them.

No, I know how you feel. some things that I bookmarked and re-read regularly just disappeared one day. You are not alone in this.

*hugs*

I've definitely had that experience too. These days, I compulsively save things to my hard drive, but there's always a gem or two that falls through the cracks.

I want copies pf her stories, too.

I'm just catching up on all the kerfuffling (from a nice, safe, totally uninvolved distance). Yes, it's sad. I do think it's their right to do it but it's still sad.

I now have this burning urge to spend tomorrow d/l fics I love just in case.

Promise me if you guys ever, heaven forbid, take down T&B, you'll give us a day's grace to do that? :;panics::

Yeah, that sucks when that happens. I've been thinking about this myself lately; I've been going on a bit of a TS fic search the last few weeks, feeling a craving to read some of the old stories I loved back in the day what with it being on Space again now. One author who I used to hang with in senslash and whose stuff I loved seems to have disappeared off the internet and all her stories with her. Luckily some of her stuff had been zined and I do own copies so I was able to satisfy my urge to reread that way, but there's still a lot missing. That's one of the advantages of zines -- the fic can't suddenly disappear on you.

Err which is a long winded way of saying I agree that it sucks horribly. :)

Any chance they were uploaded to a fandom archive? ff.net? Or has the author been yanking those too?

I mourn the removal of a S/X called "Nothing to Grasp." Does anyone know it or have it?

How about the story "Dancing About Architecture"? I don't think it was ever finished, and I'm not even sure who wrote it, but it's gone.

I thought it was Alexandria's story, but she has a new site, and it's not on there.

I have a whole list of authors that are *NOT ALLOWED* to take down their fic and *WESLEYSGIRL* is definitely on there!!!

Ooooh. Thanks. I was hoping that it had been updated too, but it's still at the same place I left it years ago.

I know exactly what's going on and why, et cetera, et cetera, but I still want to read it.

Thanks.

Are you sure you don't know the first one???

Please don't take your stuff down.

Metaforgirl has taken her fic down too. Hopefully it's just temporary. :crosses fingers and toes:

that was going to be my suggestion too, to email the author and ask if she could please send you a copy, or if there was any possible way you could get it, you won't put it up anywhere, you just want it on your hard drive so you can read it over and over.

that's happened to me on lj, the losing of stories. i totally get it.

Whew!
