Wow. Glad I violated my non-apocalypse-fic principles and stuck with this. It couldn't be less a romance, and yet it has the same sort of emotional impact by the end. I felt I was seeing shared comfort and familiarity at the end of the world, and understood that may be more powerful than romantic love.
