Info about massage?

I know basically nothing about getting a massage.
How undressed do you have to get? Is it freaky to have a complete stranger touching you? (Doctor's visits, even ones that include female exams, don't bother me much, but in my head a massage is, by its very nature, more intimate and less clinical... am I wrong?) I've had friends etc rub my shoulders and stuff, and some of them have very, very strong hands and the "massage" was on the verge of painful -- is that what a professional massage is like, or does it depend on the masseuse? Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated. :-)
