Is anyone well-versed in the ways of pilot's licenses?

Are there separate licenses for airplanes and helicopters?

Do they need to be renewed every X number of years like a driver's license, just by paying a fee, or do they require some sort of renewal test?

If someone had been a pilot for quite a few years, then stopped flying, IF they continued to renew their license when the time came, would they then be able to get in a plane, say, 5 years later and fly it? I'm not asking about ABILITY, mind you, I'm asking about whether or not it would be legal.
