Does anyone have a favorite recipe for an apple pie that has that streusel kind of topping (instead of a top crust?)

Like some of the people on my flist, I'm feeling like I can only deal with trivial things today. It feels like the only way to get through. I'm not a New Yorker. I didn't lose anyone I knew when the WTC towers collapsed. I wasn't even on LJ then, so the people I know now who live in and near New York City, the ones I would have worried about terribly until I heard they were all right, weren't even blips on my radar. Mr WG had been laid off from his job a couple of weeks before, and his previous job, halfway between here and Boston, was letting him job search from there, so he'd already gone off to the office, leaving me at home alone with the boy. The boy had just turned a year old. My dad had died less than 6 months before. The boy and I got up and went into the tv room so that I could entertain my brain while he nursed (the first hour after getting up was pretty much devoted to breastfeeding in those days) and I turned on the tv and saw the first tower burning. I was watching live when the second plane hit the second tower - that was when we knew that it wasn't just an accident. I watched in disbelief when both towers fell. Mr WG and I talked on the phone - he asked if I wanted him to come home and I said no, it was okay. And it was, because it didn't seem real. Heck, it STILL doesn't really seem real.

Oh, right. Trivial.

I'm baking pie. The boy's first day of school is tomorrow. [livejournal.com profile] flaming_muse is coming over to keep me company (and help distract me from the fact that the house will be so quiet.) I have lots of writing to catch up on. And lots of house projects. This morning, we went to a local library's book sale only to discover that this is the "free day" - the last day of the sale, when all the books are free because they just want to get rid of them. If I'd known that, I would have been sure to show up right when the doors opened. As it was, everything had been pretty picked through by the time we got there, although we got ten books or so. Some of them were doubles of books I already have, so I might post a list of them later in case anyone wants them.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] luvsbitch - many, many hugs and kisses to you, sweetie.
