Gnu fiber bar - chocolate brownie

Hm. Think I'm going to have to side with [livejournal.com profile] justhuman on this one. It's okay, but calling it "chocolate" or "brownie" would be overly generous. It has a nice, dense, sticky texture, and it's moderately sweet, but it takes more like cocoa powder than actual chocolate and I can also taste what I assume (without looking at the ingredient label) is something like raisin or date, some sticky-sweet-fruit sort of thing. It vaguely reminds me of some little no-bake cookies we used to make when I was a kid, which had, I think, oatmeal and cocoa powder and raisins in them.

Currently, I think my fave is the banana walnut, with orange cranberry a close second.

Probably the only nutrition bar I've discovered that has a reasonably good chocolate taste is Luna Bar's Nuts Over Chocolate. Most others have that pasty cocoa ick to them.

I used to like some of the Luna Bars but I haven't had one in ages!

I have been intrigued, reading your reviews of these bars. What is the sugar content like? Do they have any HFCS in them?

No HFCS! Here's the ingredients in the banana walnut bar, as an example:

Gnu High Fiber Blendâ„¢ (whole rolled oats, organic whole wheat flour, wheat bran, organic kamut, psyllium, flax, millet), chicory root inulin, fruit juices, rice dextrins, apples, canola oil, walnuts, rice, plums, banana, wheat protein isolate, natural flavors, baking powder.

This one is 140 calories, 4 g fat, 8 g sugar, 12 g fiber.

Excellent! I am okay with natural sugar, within reason, but I'm really trying to avoid any kind of added sugar or HRCS. Thank you for listing the ingredients for me. I may end up trying these. I prefer to have bars like this around for when I really want to eat, but I'm too lazy to make actual food.

Um.
It's really called 'Gnu fiber bar'? 'Cause that makes me think of eating a large, African ungulate which, really....not all that tempting.

Hee! It is kind of funny. Here's their explanation of the name from the website:

What does the name mean?

Our name was inspired by the African Gnu (pronounced "noo" or "nyoo").

The Gnu has an ox-like head, the mane of a horse, and the horns of a buffalo. It may look unusual from the outside, but inside, it functions beautifully. Flourishing in the grasslands and plains of Southern and Eastern Africa, the gnu lives in balance with nature.

At Gnu Foods, we create foods that help keep us in natural balance. Our foods are designed with you in mind, made with all natural ingredients every body needs. Since you were our inspiration, we hope you give Gnu Bars a try. And pretty soon, you'll be feeling like a "gnu" you.

So, basically, 'eat this and you'll be as regular as a gnu!!'

My my. What a marketing scheme.
