The book(s) I am reading: I actually just finished a book and haven't yet started the next one, but the next one waiting to be read is Emma Donoghue's Stir-Fry.

The book I am writing: A gay erotic romance that is so close to being completed it's laughable that I've been putting it off so long. It's about family - the things people do for their blood relatives, and the ways people create their own families.

The book I love most: Oh, seriously? How can I possibly choose one? That's impossible. I could probably create a fairly accurate list of my top 10 or 20... One book I love very, very much is Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow.

The last book I received as a gift: I don't remember! I got several books for Christmas but I can't remember which the "last" one was. I guess I'll randomly list The Butcher and the Vegetarian by Tara Austen Weaver.

The last book I gave as a gift: Gift books were most recently doled out at Christmas-time, and included things like books 5 and 6 in the How to Train Your Dragon series.

The nearest book on my desk: I'm sitting on the couch so the nearest book is in the foyer (closer than it sounds, our house is tiny!), and that's Sarah Waters' Affinity.

The Sparrow is one of my favorites, along with A Prayer for Owen Meany and, interestingly since you mention her, Emma Donoghue's Room.

I recently read Emma Donoghue's Room and was very impressed, though it is one of her few books that doesn't center around gay/lesbian themes. I liked her writing, especially her characterization, and so I'd be interested in hearing what you think of Stir-Fry.

The Sparrow is one of my favorite books ever! I didn't expect to like it so much, since religion doesn't interest me and the Catholic Church in particular tends to offend me on many levels, but I was surprised to find that a book in which many of the main characters are Jesuit priests wasn't actually about religion. At least, that's not how I interpreted it. (Though I *do* think it's about faith.) But it moved me deeply, and I have reread it more than once. I find that it only improves with repeated reading. I wasn't as fond of the sequel, but I suppose The Sparrow is a difficult act to follow. I was seriously underwhelmed by her non-genre novel A Thread of Grace, but I still intend to read more of her work in the future, because I'm looking for that magic I found in The Sparrow.

I don't know if I ever thanked you properly for the book you sent me at Christmas. I know I thanked you when I *received* it, but I don't think I let you know how much I appreciated it once I opened it. It is especially meaningful to me because it is about an issue we share. So thank you.
